Are You at Risk? Common Causes of Broken Bones
Broken bones, also known as fractures, are a common injury that can happen to anyone at any age. Whether it’s a fall, a sports injury, or a car accident, there are many different ways that a bone can break. Understanding the common causes of broken bones can help you take steps to prevent them.
One of the most common causes of broken bones is falls. Slippery floors, uneven sidewalks, and icy pathways can all increase the risk of falling and breaking a bone. Falls are especially dangerous for older adults, as weaker bones and decreased balance can make them more prone to fractures. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are the leading cause of fractures in older adults.
Sports injuries are another common cause of broken bones. High-impact sports like football, soccer, and basketball can put athletes at risk for fractures, especially if they collide with another player or land awkwardly. Overuse injuries from repetitive motions, such as running or jumping, can also lead to stress fractures – tiny cracks in the bone that can result from overloading the bone without giving it enough time to heal.
